The presentation by Managing Director Jürgen Muth illustrated why stadiums — and the Allianz Arena in particular — are uniquely positioned to contribute to Europe’s electrification needs. The arena already has surplus energy capacity, sits at one of Germany’s busiest motorway intersections, and offers extensive space that can be repurposed without impacting matchday operations. These conditions make it an ideal location for the kind of scalable charging infrastructure required to support the next generation of freight mobility.
Bayern Munich has already launched a pilot phase, installing CCS charging points to test utilisation, operational constraints and integration with partners. The long-term ambition is to build a megawatt-level charging hub using MCS technology — a system capable of charging heavy vehicles in under 30 minutes. While the technology is still developing and the economic case will take time to solidify, the Allianz Arena project has a strong sustainability impact and showcases how large venues can serve as catalysts for regional decarbonisation.
