A unique nine-year study has found a clear link between thatch (the layer of dead grass) and mat thickness (the denser root zone below). When thatch is too thick, the mat becomes too thin, increasing the risk of poor turf performance. Different grass species and varieties show big differences in this balance.

Choosing the right grasses and managing them well can reduce the need for heavy maintenance, pesticides and water – a big step towards more sustainable sports fields.
