Introducing the ESSMA Safety Cohort: A Collaborative Journey Towards Safer Stadiums

Following the success of the ESSMA Safety & Operations Workshop 2025 in Brussels and Leuven, we are proud to announce the launch of a new initiative aimed at continuing the dialogue and fostering long-term collaboration among safety professionals across Europe: the ESSMA Safety Cohort. This structured programme will bring together 8 to 10 clubs committed to further exploring the key challenges, insights, and best practices around stadium safety and operations.

A Cohort-Based Approach to Industry Challenges

The ESSMA Safety Cohort will unfold over several interactive phases throughout 2025, providing a platform for ongoing knowledge sharing and peer-to-peer learning. The focus is to dive deeper into the topics raised during the Safety Workshop and to support clubs in applying these insights within their own contexts.

Phase 1 – Kick-Off Session

In April, the selected cohort participants will join a virtual kick-off session via Microsoft Teams. This opening call will offer an opportunity to reflect on the key takeaways from the Safety Workshop, share immediate thoughts, and align expectations for the months ahead.

Phase 2 – One-on-One Club Consultations

In May, ESSMA will organise individual online sessions with each participating club. During these 1-on-1 conversations, we will explore:
• The club’s current status and practices around safety management
• Key challenges and ambitions for the near future
• Specific support or input they would welcome from the ESSMA network

ESSMA may also conduct light desk research to provide further background information or support tailored advice.

Phase 3 – Peer Exchange & Best Practice Sharing

In June, the cohort will reconvene online. During this session, four clubs will present a short case study or best practice, based on successful implementations or innovative approaches within their own operations. The remaining clubs will have the opportunity to do the same in a second cohort session in September, ensuring all voices and experiences are shared across the group.

Phase 4 – Final Insights at the ESSMA Summit

The journey will culminate in November 2025 during the ESSMA Summit, where the insights, case studies, and progress made by the cohort will be presented in a dedicated session. This final stage will give broader visibility to the outcomes of the cohort and offer inspiration to the wider ESSMA community.

Why Join the ESSMA Safety Cohort?

By participating, clubs will:
Connect with peers facing similar challenges
Receive personalised insights through 1-on-1 guidance
Share and gain inspiration from concrete, real-life cases
Play an active role in shaping the future of stadium safety in Europe

This project embodies ESSMA’s commitment to long-term engagement, practical knowledge sharing, and member-driven development. We look forward to taking this next step together with some of the most forward-thinking safety and operations teams across Europe.
