This week, we are delighted to present John Cantwell.
John Cantwell is the Stadium Director at Thomond Park Stadium in Limerick, Ireland, where he oversees all operations, including commercial and event management on both match and non-match days. Prior to this role, he played a key role in the development of the Mahon Point retail complex in Cork and spent six years as Commercial Manager with Shannon Heritage. In addition, he brings 15 years of senior management experience in high-street and airport retail.
When asked about his thoughts on the concept of an EXCO within ESSMA, John emphasised that it provides the organisation with structured direction, guidance, and expertise from industry professionals. He further highlighted the crucial role of EXCO in ensuring that ESSMA remains relevant to its diverse range of stakeholders.
John has been involved with ESSMA for many years, an experience that has significantly benefited his career in the stadium industry. He regards the ESSMA knowledge platform as an invaluable resource, providing relevant information that has guided many of his professional decisions and actions. Additionally, he greatly values the annual ESSMA Summits, describing them as an excellent opportunity to network and engage with industry peers. These events offer a relaxed setting for professionals to exchange ideas, explore opportunities, and discuss common challenges.
Regarding his contributions to the ESSMA EXCO, John believes that his 17 years of experience in the stadium industry will be a valuable asset to the organisation. A key focus for him is enhancing the fan experience and customer care, a perspective he is eager to bring to EXCO.
He concluded our conversation with a statement that encapsulates his approach to the industry:
“No fans… no business.”
