Luton Town Stadium Project Set for Summer Start with Limak Partnership
Luton Town has confirmed that construction on its new 25,000-seat stadium at Power Court will begin this summer, following a partnership agreement with Limak International. The Turkish construction firm, known for its work on Barcelona’s Spotify Camp Nou redevelopment, will lead the initial phase of the project.
The stadium replaces Kenilworth Road and marks the centrepiece of a wider regeneration of a 20-acre site near Luton Railway Station. Originally approved in 2019, plans have since evolved—especially after the club’s brief Premier League spell in 2023–24—to launch the venue at full capacity.
Alongside the stadium, the development will feature a hotel with 150 rooms and a 1,800-capacity music venue. Luton aims to host its first match at Power Court in the 2028–29 season.
The club emphasised the project’s long-term impact, promising over 1,000 permanent jobs and one of the UK’s most environmentally sustainable stadiums, targeting a high BREEAM rating.
Chief executive Gary Sweet described the build as a “transformative opportunity” to cement the club’s future and its connection with the community. Limak expressed its excitement in bringing Luton’s vision to life with a globally experienced team.
Milan Moves Forward with San Siro Stadium Talks After Tender Yields No Alternatives
The Municipality of Milan has announced it will enter direct negotiations with AC Milan and Inter Milan over their proposed redevelopment of the San Siro site, after a public tender process failed to attract any alternative bids. The tender, launched in March, aimed to test whether other, potentially better, proposals existed for the land surrounding the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza. None were received by the April 30 deadline.
This outcome clears the way for further technical evaluation of the clubs’ plan, which includes a new 71,500-seat stadium and mixed-use development valued at €1.25 billion. The land and current stadium have been valued at €197 million by Italy’s Revenue Agency, with the clubs hoping to conclude a purchase agreement by July.
The current San Siro faces looming redevelopment limits due to historic preservation status expected later this year, which would restrict major modifications. This deadline adds urgency to the approval process, with both clubs seeking a declaration of public interest for their project by June 30.
While previous plans to relocate to suburban areas were explored—Milan in San Donato and Inter in Rozzano—the San Siro project has regained traction as the preferred option for a shared, modern home stadium.
Zagreb Begins Construction on First New Stadium in Over 50 Years
The City of Zagreb has officially launched the €44 million redevelopment of Stadion Kranjčevićeva, marking the capital’s first new stadium project in over five decades. The reconstruction will more than double the venue’s capacity and serve as a temporary home for GNK Dinamo Zagreb and the Croatian national team, while plans progress for a larger replacement for Stadion Maksimir.
Currently hosting NK Lokomotiva, Stadion Kranjčevićeva will expand from 5,350 to 11,163 seats and meet UEFA category four standards. The project, fully funded by the City of Zagreb, will also deliver new urban infrastructure, including a city square, over 400 parking spaces, and enhanced athlete and fan facilities. Sustainability is a key focus, with a 1 MW solar plant planned to improve energy efficiency.
Construction, led by Strabag’s Croatian division, is expected to be completed by late 2026. Zagreb’s mayor, Tomislav Tomašević, called it a “historic day” for city football, promising a second major venue—a new 35,000-seat Stadion Maksimir—by 2029 in partnership with the national government.
Officials hailed the project as the long-awaited start of a new era in Croatian football infrastructure.
Palermo and City Authorities Set Plans in Motion for Stadio Barbera Redevelopment
Palermo FC and the City of Palermo have committed to a joint effort to modernise Stadio Renzo Barbera, aiming to secure the venue’s future as a safe, certified, and modern home for the club. The initiative, supported by both local and national authorities, has entered a decisive phase, with €3 million already allocated by the municipality for urgent upgrades.
The stadium, a longstanding home for the Rosanero, is in need of significant renovation to meet the standards required by the Football League ahead of the 2025–26 season. These initial works will focus on securing safety certifications and compliance. A major milestone has already been reached with the approval of a structural fitness certificate, ensuring that the venue can continue operating without safety risks.
Italy’s Minister of Sport, Andrea Abodi, has backed the project, stating that Palermo deserves a stadium that reflects its sporting ambitions—regardless of whether it is selected as a Euro 2032 host city. His endorsement affirms national-level support for the project.
While the renewal of the stadium concession is still pending, all stakeholders stress that the process is “irreversible”, and modernisation efforts will begin without delay to meet both sporting and infrastructural goals.
Private Investment to Revive Argentina’s Estadio Minella
A major step toward revitalising Argentina’s Estadio José María Minella has been taken with the submission of a redevelopment and operations proposal from Brazilian real estate and entertainment group Revee, in partnership with Argentine sports developer Proenter. Their bid, the only valid offer in an international tender launched by the Municipality of General Pueyrredón, aims to modernise the historic Mar del Plata venue, originally built for the 1978 FIFA World Cup.
The Minella has seen declining use and structural issues in recent years—most notably the closure of its main grandstand in 2021. Despite being home to local teams Alvarado and Aldosivi, the stadium has struggled without sustained investment. Unlike many Argentine venues managed at the provincial level, Minella is owned by the local municipality, making large-scale maintenance more challenging.
Revee and Proenter’s project proposes a full renovation, including hospitality, retail, and gaming zones, and is backed by the Argentine Football Association (AFA). The plan is structured around a 30-year concession with a potential 10-year extension, aiming to return the venue to national prominence as a host for international matches and major events.
Hamilton Academical to Relocate Amid Stadium Dispute and Relegation
Hamilton Academical FC will relocate to Broadwood Stadium in Cumbernauld for the 2025–26 season, following an irreparable breakdown in negotiations over continued use of New Douglas Park and confirmation of relegation from the Scottish Championship.
The club, which has called New Douglas Park home since 2001, announced it could no longer accept the tenancy terms offered by HAFC Stadium Ltd, the company owning the venue and directed by former owner Colin McGowan. Chairman Jock Brown cited unresolved financial imbalances, an unacceptable lease draft, and unsatisfactory tenancy conditions as reasons for the decision. Efforts to purchase the stadium or the owning company reportedly failed due to a lack of transparency and missing warranties.
The announcement came just hours before the Scottish Football Association (SFA) upheld a 15-point deduction, imposed over breaches of SPFL rules, including misstatements regarding stadium ownership. The ruling confirms Hamilton’s relegation to League One, undoing last year’s promotion.
With the move to Broadwood Stadium—formerly home to Clyde FC—Hamilton has also initiated discussions with South Lanarkshire Council to identify a site for a new permanent stadium. The board has committed to innovative fan engagement initiatives during this transitional period.
Meanwhile, Clyde FC, who had moved to New Douglas Park after ending their lease at Broadwood in 2022, confirmed they will remain in Hamilton next season despite the upheaval.
Lord’s to Host Final of 2026 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup
Lord’s Cricket Ground will host the final of the 2026 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in England, with the tournament set to feature 33 matches across seven iconic venues from July 5, 2026.
The 12-team tournament will take place over 24 days and includes venues such as Emirates Old Trafford (Manchester), Headingley (Leeds), Edgbaston (Birmingham), Utilita Bowl (Hampshire), Kia Oval (London), and Seat Unique Stadium (Bristol). The schedule for the event, featuring two groups followed by knockout stages, will be announced later.
New Zealand, the defending champions, triumphed in the 2024 edition in the UAE, after the event’s relocation from Bangladesh. Eight countries have already qualified, with the final four spots to be decided through a qualifier in 2026.
Richard Gould, CEO of the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), expressed excitement for the event, calling it the “biggest women’s cricket event ever staged in England and Wales” and emphasizing the long-term impact on the sport. He highlighted Lord’s as the perfect venue for the final, having hosted the 2017 Women’s Cricket World Cup final between England and India.
The 2026 Women’s T20 World Cup follows the success of the 2023 edition in South Africa and the 2020 tournament in Australia, which saw 86,174 fans attend the final at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
MAMGUSTA Architekci Wins Design Competition for Stadion Miejski w Rybnik Reconstruction
MAMGUSTA Architekci has emerged as the winner of the design competition to reconstruct and expand Stadion Miejski w Rybnik, located in the Polish city of Rybnik. The competition, organized by the Katowice branch of the Association of Polish Architects and contracted by the City of Rybnik, received 56 submissions, with 17 full applications. MAMGUSTA’s design was ultimately selected.
Originally opened in 1939, the stadium hosts the ROW Rybnik speedway team, which competes in Poland’s top-tier Ekstraliga, as well as the local football club. The reconstruction was deemed necessary after the venue was found to no longer meet modern standards for sports and mass events.
Under the design guidelines, the speedway track must remain at its current length, and the football pitch will stay in place. Capacity will increase from 10,384 to 15,000, with a new roof to be installed. The project, estimated at PLN 200m (approximately £39.8m/€46.8m/$53.2m), is expected to begin next year and will be carried out in five stages to allow the stadium to remain operational during construction.
Piotr Kuczera, Mayor of Rybnik, emphasized the stadium’s significance, saying, “It is not just a place for sports events but a space that builds the city’s identity and integrates residents.” The renovation is designed to be implemented gradually, ensuring the venue continues to serve the community throughout the process.
MAMGUSTA Architekci stated that their design aimed to create a facility that blends seamlessly with the surrounding greenery and lake views, offering a sense of peace and timeless elegance. The stadium will aim for authenticity in form and structure, ensuring it complements its environment rather than dominating it.
