As the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 kicks off in the United States this weekend, the spotlight isn’t just on the clubs competing for global glory – it’s also on the 12 uniquely American stadiums that will host them. These venues are more than just homes to football (both the round-ball and oval-ball versions). They are entertainment hubs, sustainability pioneers, culinary hotspots, and cultural landmarks.

We take you on a quick tour of these fascinating venues – not just to admire their scale and features, but to highlight the less obvious, yet deeply compelling, stories they tell.

But first, what is the FIFA Club World Cup?

This expanded edition brings together 32 of the world’s top football clubs – including European giants – to compete in a month-long tournament similar in format to the FIFA World Cup. With matches spread across the U.S., it’s not only a test of footballing prowess but a showcase of American stadium culture – where sport meets spectacle in unexpected ways.

Stadium Snapshots: A Fusion of Football and Everything Else

1. Mercedes-Benz Stadium (Atlanta)
 TRUE Platinum for zero waste
This stadium isn’t just sleek and modern – it’s also green. It’s the world’s first stadium to achieve TRUE Platinum certification for zero waste, diverting over 90% of its refuse through composting and recycling.

2. Hard Rock Stadium (Miami)
Where El Clásico rocked North America
In 2017, this NFL stadium made global football history by hosting El Clásico, bringing Real Madrid vs. Barcelona to U.S. soil for the first time.

3. Camping World Stadium (Orlando)
 Hollywood cameo in “The Waterboy”
This 1936-built venue doesn’t just host sports – it’s got a role in cinema history, standing in for the fictional Bourbon Bowl in the Adam Sandler comedy The Waterboy.

4. Inter & Co Stadium (Orlando)
 From goals to grand overtures
This MLS venue broke new ground by hosting a full orchestra concert – the first of its kind at a U.S. soccer stadium – proving football grounds can double as cultural stages.

5. MetLife Stadium (New York)
The stadium that feeds your foodie soul
Think beyond hot dogs. With over 90 food and drink options (lobster rolls, anyone?), MetLife’s Eats program is a culinary experience of its own.

6. Rose Bowl (Pasadena)
 The Granddad of Them All
Opened in 1922 and host of the 1994 World Cup Final, this historic venue oozes legacy. It’s the oldest stadium in the tournament – and one of the most iconic.

7. Audi Field (Washington D.C.)
 Beer lovers, rejoice
Home to MLS’s D.C. United, this stadium features the largest beer tap wall in any U.S. stadium – 40 taps of local craft beer goodness.

8. Lumen Field (Seattle)
 Demolished, recycled, reborn
Built from the remains of the old Kingdome, this venue shows what’s possible when sustainability meets design. About half the materials used to build Lumen came from the old stadium.

9. Lincoln Financial Field (Philadelphia)
 Where eagles literally soar
Meet Lincoln, the stadium’s very own bald eagle mascot, who flies over the pitch during the national anthem – blending patriotism with pageantry.

10. Geodis Park (Nashville)
Where football meets The Rolling Stones
The U.S.’s largest soccer-specific stadium is also a rising music mecca. In true Nashville fashion, it’s hosted acts like Taylor Swift and The Rolling Stones.

11. TQL Stadium (Cincinnati)
 An architectural marvel
This visually stunning stadium won the Prix Versailles for design. Its glowing LED-lit fins make it one of the most eye-catching football venues anywhere.

12. Bank of America Stadium (Charlotte)
 Football, yes. Baseball? Sure.
This NFL stadium proved its versatility in 2025 by hosting baseball for the first time – specifically, the wildly popular baseball team Savannah Bananas – highlighting a growing trend of cross-sport adaptability.

Final Whistle: What Europe Can Learn

For ESSMA members and European stadium professionals, the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup offers more than just a look at the world’s best clubs in action. It’s a case study in stadium innovation – how multifunctionality, sustainability, and fan-centric design can co-exist in vibrant, commercially savvy venues.

Whether it’s zero waste, orchestras in the stands, or beer walls longer than some bars, these U.S. stadiums are proving that the future of sports venues lies in diversity of use and experience.

As the games begin, we’ll be watching the football – but also the stadium stories that unfold around it.
