Ban on Sunflower Seeds at Mestalla
Starting with the 2025–26 season, Valencia CF will implement a ban on sunflower seeds at the Mestalla. The measure aims to enhance hygiene and stadium comfort, as discarded shells pose sanitary hazards, clog drains, and create disturbance for neighbours during post-match cleaning.
Sunflower seeds had already been removed from official catering two years prior; now the ban extends to consumption during matches, with supporters urged to cooperate and contribute to keeping the stadium clean. Traditionally, sunflower seeds—locally known as “pipas”—have been integral to matchday culture, but fans now joke their days are numbered. Vendors around the stadium report a noticeable drop in sales. This ban follows earlier restrictions on alcohol (since the 1990 Sports Law) and smoking (banned in 2021), making pipas the latest prohibited item at Mestalla. Valencia joins other Spanish clubs like Real Sociedad and Elche, which have discouraged pipas due to plug and pests concerns.

Starbucks Makes Stadium Debut at Bernabéu
Starbucks has opened its first-ever football stadium branch inside Madrid’s Estadio Santiago Bernabéu, also marking the company’s largest site in Spain. The two-floor outlet spans 900 m² and offers stadium-bowl views. Scheduled opening hours vary: 7.30 am–10 pm Monday to Thursday; extended til 11 pm on Fridays; adjusted weekend hours; and altered arrangements on matchdays when the space serves VIP guests.
This branch is also Spain’s first Starbucks Reserve, joining an exclusive group including Seattle, Chicago, New York, Milan, Shanghai, and Tokyo, offering extraordinary coffees and roast craftsmanship. Designed as an immersive experience, the location includes a mixology and tasting area. Antonio Romero, Starbucks Iberia’s CEO, described it as a “milestone” and “unparalleled” experience. The branch also ties into wider redevelopment of the Bernabéu: Madrid City Council recently provisionally approved a revised €19.6 million regeneration plan, fully funded by Real Madrid, aimed at better integrating the stadium into the city’s urban landscape.

Fifteen North American Stadiums Ruled Out of 2026 World Cup
With fewer than a year until the 2026 World Cup, the USA, Canada, and Mexico are gearing up, though many cities fell by the wayside. Of almost 50 bids, only 16 stadiums were selected. Fifteen notable venues were ultimately ruled out:
Canada’s Rogers Centre (Toronto) lacked visibility and had artificial turf; Montreal’s Olympic Stadium lost provincial funding; Edmonton’s Commonwealth Stadium faced renovation, funding, and surface concerns. In the US, Chicago withdrew over unclear FIFA guarantees. Landover’s Northwest Stadium was deemed outdated. Cincinnati’s Paycor Stadium failed due to lack of infrastructure. Nashville’s uncertain stadium future and small market hurt its bid. In Indianapolis, artificial turf remained. Baltimore–Washington’s joint bid was rejected. Las Vegas’s Allegiant Stadium had design issues. Minneapolis pulled out due to fiscal concerns, while Charlotte’s Bank of America Stadium couldn’t meet pitch specs. New Orleans’ Superdome was excluded due to its fixed roof. Denver lacked funding and transport, and Glendale withdrew amid legal and financial uncertainties.

San Siro: A Stadium at Crossroads between Legacy and Future
The historic San Siro stadium faces an uncertain fate as cultural heritage laws severely limit redevelopment. Twenty-seven plaques honouring Milan’s and Inter’s triumphs on the west stand are legally protected as a “public archive on display”, making demolition or removal impossible. Furthermore, if the second tier’s construction date is confirmed as 1955, a 70-year heritage protection rule will apply from 2025, preventing radical reconstruction.
A feasibility study by WeBuild and Arco Associati estimated a €371 million renovation—less than half the €810 million needed for a new build—but the document was not publicly archived. Mayor Sala has set a deadline before November 10 to resolve plans, but political opposition has delayed decisions into September. UEFA has already rejected San Siro as a Euro 2032 host. Milan and Inter remain committed to a joint project: part-destroy the second tier, convert it into a museum, build a new arena on adjacent parking land, and increase hospitality seating from 3,000 to around 10,000, with expected costs of €1–1.5 billion.

Sporting Lisbon’s José Alvalade Reimagined
Sporting CP’s Estádio José Alvalade has undergone its first major upgrade since its opening 22 years ago, dubbed “Estádio José Alvalade 2.0” and set to debut on 30 August against FC Porto. Renovations include a modernised players’ tunnel, an enhanced museum with a Golden Ball room for legends like Figo and Ronaldo, and a hybrid natural-synthetic pitch. The removal of the separating “moat” enabled the addition of 2,000 new seats, boosting capacity to 52,000. But controversy surrounds a VIP Pitch Row of luxury seats above the tunnel: ultras group Torcida Verde condemn it as elitist, arguing fans were not consulted and calling for standing-only sections instead. Sporting defends the row as an innovation offering an unforgettable experience.

Villa Park Expansion Poised for Green Light
Aston Villa’s proposed expansion of Villa Park has been recommended for approval ahead of an upcoming meeting of Birmingham City Council’s planning committee on 28 August. Plans centre on the North Stand, aiming to raise its capacity above 12,000. The club targets completion in the second half of 2027 to host UEFA Euro 2028 matches.
The vision extends beyond seating: The Warehouse, a repurposed academy building on-site, is due to open by December 2025 as a 3,500-capacity live entertainment space, supporting music, comedy, and guest events, thanks to a partnership with Oak View Group. A new club shop opened in April 2025. Legends have been appointed to enhance hospitality offerings, following a 17-space premium upgrade, and Villa extended its service partnership with Levy UK+I for ten years. Meanwhile, rival Birmingham City is planning a new 60,000-seat stadium supported by forthcoming metro expansion.

Boldyn and Virgin Media O2 Bring 5G to Stadium of Light
Boldyn Networks, in collaboration with Virgin Media O2, has deployed the UK’s first full neutral-host Open RAN managed 5G service at Sunderland AFC’s Stadium of Light via the SONET project. Partnering with Sunderland City Council, the British Esports Federation, and others, Boldyn’s connectivity-as-a-service (CaaS) integrates a modern DAS system with O-RAN fronthaul and JMA XRAN technology, overseen by Boldyn’s Network Management System.
Fans now enjoy high-speed 5G, enabling richer digital services like social media uploads, in-seat food ordering, and enhanced safety—all dramatic improvements over the decade-old system. The upgrade was supported by a £5.7 million Open Networks Ecosystem grant awarded in 2023. Sunderland’s Chief Business Officer emphasised the initiative as a leap in fan experience, while Boldyn’s CEO celebrated the project as pioneering in high-density venues. The upgrade coincides with new premium hospitality services from Delaware North.
