Everton Bids Emotional Farewell to Goodison Park

Everton Football Club has officially closed a historic chapter by playing its final men’s match at Goodison Park on 18 May 2025. The 2–0 win against Southampton, witnessed by a sell-out crowd of 39,201, marked the end of 132 years at the iconic ground, affectionately known as “The Grand Old Lady.” Iliman Ndiaye scored both goals in what was the 2,791st men’s match at the stadium.

Following the match, an emotional farewell ceremony included appearances from club legends such as Joe Royle, Peter Reid and Duncan Ferguson, alongside musical tributes and a fireworks display. Manager David Moyes addressed the fans with a heartfelt speech reflecting on the club’s proud history and its ambitions for the future.

From the 2025–26 season, Everton’s men’s team will relocate to the newly built Hill Dickinson Stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, which boasts a capacity of 52,888 and one of the largest stadium sponsorship deals in Europe.

Rather than being demolished, Goodison Park will be repurposed as the permanent home of Everton Women. The ground will undergo upgrades to meet Women’s Super League standards, ensuring that the spirit and legacy of Goodison Park continue for generations to come.

Reale Arena Expansion Ahead of 2030 FIFA World Cup

Real Sociedad’s Reale Arena in San Sebastián is set to undergo a significant expansion, adding 2,000 seats to meet the requirements for hosting matches during the 2030 FIFA World Cup. This development will increase the stadium’s capacity to 42,247, surpassing the 40,000-seat minimum mandated for World Cup venues. The additional seating will be distributed with 1,000 seats in the upper tiers of the main and east stands, and another 1,000 in the stadium’s corner sections.

Initially announced in December 2023, the expansion aligns with Spain’s role as a co-host for the 2030 tournament, alongside Portugal and Morocco. The Reale Arena has been shortlisted among 11 proposed stadiums by the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) for the event.

Concurrently, Real Sociedad is seeking a new naming rights partner, as Reale Seguros, the current sponsor since 2012, will conclude its partnership at the end of the season. The insurance company had acquired naming rights to the stadium, formerly known as Estadio de Anoeta, in 2019.

The expansion and sponsorship transition mark a pivotal moment for Real Sociedad, positioning the club and its stadium on the global stage for the upcoming World Cup.

Anderlecht Considers New Stadium Development at Former Cora Site

R.S.C. Anderlecht is exploring the possibility of constructing a new stadium, with a preferred site identified at the former Cora supermarket location in Anderlecht. Club chairman Wouter Vandenhaute revealed that while the current 21,500-capacity Lotto Park remains adequate, the club is assessing options to support future growth. The Cora site, now vacant following the supermarket chain’s exit from Belgium, presents an opportunity for development within the municipality.

Vandenhaute emphasised that the project is in its early stages, with no definitive plans or timelines established. He noted that the initiative would be financed by the club’s shareholders, including himself, Marc Coucke, and Geert Duyck, ensuring that the club’s finances remain unaffected. The proposed stadium aims to be a multi-use facility, potentially accommodating Belgian national team matches. While the club prefers to remain in Anderlecht, alternative locations are also under consideration. The current stadium, Lotto Park, has been the club’s home since 1917.

WRU Unveils Two-Phase Redevelopment Plan for Principality Stadium

The Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) has announced a comprehensive two-phase redevelopment strategy for Cardiff’s Principality Stadium, aiming to modernise the 73,000-capacity venue and maintain its status as a premier international events location. WRU CEO Abi Tierney outlined the plans during a meeting with the Senedd’s Culture, Communications, Welsh Language, Sport and International Relations Committee.

Phase one involves procuring a new partner to manage hospitality and events, with the selection expected by September 2025. This phase aims to enhance the stadium’s offerings and attract world-class events. Phase two, commencing in 2026, will focus on a strategic redevelopment to guide the stadium into the next 25 years.

A significant aspect of the redevelopment includes installing solar panels on the stadium’s roof to reduce energy costs and promote environmental sustainability.

The WRU’s financial stability is credited for enabling this long-term investment, ensuring the Principality Stadium remains competitive with newer venues and continues to attract major international events.

Camp Nou’s VIP Overhaul Sparks Praise and Pitch Concerns

FC Barcelona’s ongoing renovation of Spotify Camp Nou is redefining the matchday experience with its ambitious Barça Hospitality programme. The revamped stadium will feature 9,400 VIP seats – tripling the previous number – across various premium categories, including Suites & Boxes, Loge Seats, and the exclusive Player Zone, many of which have already sold out. These offerings provide fans with unparalleled access, luxurious amenities, and immersive experiences, positioning Camp Nou among the world’s elite sports venues.

However, the project’s timeline has raised eyebrows. Despite no imminent matches, the club has sown a new pitch, prompting questions about its practicality. Experts argue that laying turf amidst ongoing construction exposes it to damage, necessitating potential replacements before actual use. While the move may aim to boost fan morale, it underscores the challenges of balancing marketing strategies with construction realities.

As the stadium’s transformation progresses, FC Barcelona strives to harmonise luxury enhancements with operational pragmatism, ensuring that the iconic venue meets both aesthetic aspirations and functional demands.

FK Železiarne Podbrezová Eyes New Stadium in Brezno

FK Železiarne Podbrezová is considering relocating to a newly proposed stadium in Brezno, approximately 8 kilometres from their current home in Podbrezová. The planned facility, designed by Promiprojekt, aims to accommodate 4,885 spectators and meet UEFA Category III standards, enabling it to host European competitions. The design integrates local natural motifs, featuring perforated metal facades inspired by the Low Tatras and Ďumbier mountain, and includes modern amenities such as locker rooms, administrative offices, and commercial spaces.

The project, spearheaded by the city of Brezno, is still in the planning stages, with no formal agreements signed. FK Podbrezová’s management has expressed cautious interest, noting that any potential move would position the club as tenants rather than owners.

Currently, FK Železiarne Podbrezová plays at Zelpo Aréna in Podbrezová, which holds around 4,000 spectators. The club has been upgrading the stadium to meet Slovak First Football League requirements, including renovations to seating, facilities, and the playing surface.

The proposed move to Brezno reflects the club’s ambition to enhance its infrastructure and fan experience, aligning with its recent successes in the Slovak top division. https://stadiumdb.com/news/2025/05/slovakia_will_fk_zeleziarne_podbrezova_get_new_stadium
