FC Lugano’s AIL Arena prepares for official opening

FC Lugano is preparing to open its new home, the AIL Arena, marking a major milestone in both the club’s development and the city’s wider Sports and Events Precinct project.

The new stadium will have a capacity of just over 8,000 seats and meets UEFA Category 4 standards, enabling it to host European competitions. It is expected to stage its first official matches ahead of the 2026/27 season, before fully replacing the club’s long-time home at Cornaredo, where FC Lugano has played for more than 70 years.

The AIL Arena has been designed as a compact, modern and digitally enabled venue. It features advanced audiovisual systems, including large-scale screens and a 360-degree sound system, alongside upgraded hospitality areas and premium seating designed to enhance both fan experience and commercial performance.

The stadium is a key component of a broader mixed-use development, which also includes additional sports facilities, commercial spaces and community infrastructure. This integrated approach aims to activate the site year-round, positioning the venue not only as a football stadium but as a central hub for sport, events and local engagement.

Stadio Renzo Barbera to undergo redevelopment

Populous has been appointed as the stadium designer for the proposed redevelopment of the Stadio Renzo Barbera, home of Italian Serie B club Palermo FC. The appointment follows a key administrative step confirming the technical and financial feasibility of the project and paving the way for the next phase: the decision-making conference.

As part of the feasibility study, Populous put forward four possible redevelopment scenarios, each differing in scale, cost and impact on the surrounding urban fabric. The preferred option proposes a comprehensive overhaul on the current site, including full roofing of all stands, improved accessibility, and new public and commercial spaces — bringing capacity to between 30,000 and 36,000 seats. Estimated costs range from €210 million to €350 million, with construction expected to begin in early 2027 and completion targeted no later than June 2031.

A key driver behind the project is Palermo’s ambition to be selected as a host venue for Euro 2032, with five Italian venues set to be confirmed before the end of 2026. The redevelopment is designed to meet UEFA requirements and position the Barbera as a venue capable of hosting top-level international football.

Stadium investment driving LaLiga to record revenue highs

LaLiga has reported a record €5.46bn in total revenues for the 2024/25 season, with strong growth in both matchday and commercial income playing a key role in the increase.

Commercial revenues reached new highs of over €1.5bn, reflecting expanded sponsorship portfolios, improved brand positioning and increased global reach. At the same time, matchday revenues and attendance also set new benchmarks, with more than 17 million spectators attending matches across the league, underlining the continued importance of stadium-driven income.

The figures highlight how clubs are increasingly leveraging their venues as commercial assets, supported by investments in stadium modernisation, enhanced hospitality offerings and improved fan experience. These developments have contributed to higher utilisation rates and stronger per-match revenue performance.

Alongside revenue growth, LaLiga clubs also reported improved financial stability, supported by more balanced income streams and ongoing infrastructure investment. The results reinforce the league’s continued recovery and expansion, with matchday and commercial activities playing an increasingly central role in overall business performance.

Boca Juniors plans major La Bombonera expansion

Boca Juniors has outlined plans for a major expansion of the iconic La Bombonera, aiming to increase capacity from around 57,000 to approximately 80,000 as part of a significant redevelopment project.

The proposal, estimated at $50–60 million, would represent the most extensive upgrade in the stadium’s history. The project is expected to begin during the upcoming World Cup period and could take around two years to complete. Importantly, the club has confirmed its intention to expand rather than replace the stadium, preserving the unique architecture and atmosphere that have made La Bombonera one of the most recognisable venues in world football.

The expansion is driven by strong and consistent demand, with current capacity limiting access for a large fanbase and membership base. Increasing the number of seats will allow more supporters to attend matches, while planned upgrades are also expected to improveinfrastructure and overall stadium functionality.

By retaining its historic home while modernising and expanding it, Boca Juniors aims to balance heritage with future needs. The project represents a key step in the club’s long-term infrastructure strategy, reinforcing La Bombonera’s role as a central asset both culturally and commercially.

Atlético de Madrid secures funding for Europe’s largest surf lagoon at Metropolitano

Funding has been secured for Gemswell Surf Madrid, one of the flagship projects within Ciudad del Deporte, the sports city venture Atlético de Madrid is developing around the Riyadh Air Metropolitano stadium. Covering 23,000m², the surf lagoon is set to become the largest of its kind in Europe.

The total investment exceeds €60m, financed through a syndicated loan jointly held by Banco Santander and BBVA, alongside a participating loan of approximately €15.7m from European funds. The project is being promoted by Stoneweg InfraSport in association with Atlético, with contributions from club members.

Ciudad del Deporte itself represents a total investment of around €350m and is expected to begin initial operations later this year. Once complete, the complex will include an athletics track, multi-purpose sports courts, a high-performance centre for Atlético, leisure and multi-sport spaces, and a range of commercial, catering, and hospitality facilities.
