CD Leganés Secures 50-Year Lease for Estadio Municipal de Butarque
CD Leganés has finalised a 50-year lease agreement with the Leganés City Council for the Estadio Municipal de Butarque, securing its long-term future at the stadium. As part of the deal, the club will pay €16.85 million over the lease term, ensuring stability and control over its home ground.
In addition to the lease agreement, CD Leganés will invest €5.7 million in the construction of a new sports centre in Leganés Norte. This facility will include an 11-a-side artificial grass football pitch, six tennis courts, and a multi-sport hall, providing modern infrastructure to benefit both the club and the local community. Construction is set to begin within the next 18 months and is expected to be completed within 21 months.
The agreement also allows CD Leganés to move forward with planned renovations for Estadio Municipal de Butarque. Proposed improvements include expanding the stadium’s seating capacity and adding roofing to the stands, enhancing the experience for fans and increasing the venue’s potential for hosting larger events.
This long-term lease marks a significant milestone for the club, providing the legal and financial certainty needed to develop both the stadium and surrounding sports facilities, reinforcing its commitment to growth and community engagement.

Newcastle United Nearing Decision on St James’ Park Future
Newcastle United is approaching a crucial decision regarding the future of St James’ Park. The club is evaluating whether to redevelop its historic stadium or build a new venue. Chief Commercial Officer Peter Silverstone described the complexity of the decision as “comparing apples to pears.”
St James’ Park, with its 52,000-seat capacity, is renowned for its atmosphere and home advantage. However, a new stadium could provide greater matchday and non-matchday revenue opportunities. The matter has gained urgency following a recent visit from Yasir Al-Rumayyan, chairman of Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), Newcastle’s majority stakeholder. Al-Rumayyan attended a match at St James’ Park and later held strategic discussions with the club’s board, covering both stadium and training centre developments.
Speaking at the Financial Times Business of Football Summit, Silverstone reaffirmed that “no decisions have been made yet” and stressed that “everything starts with the fans.” He assured supporters that a well-considered decision would be made, with an official announcement expected in early 2025.
This decision represents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Newcastle United, as the club seeks to balance its cherished history with ambitions for long-term growth and success.
Stadionul Dan Păltinișanu Demolished for New Timișoara Stadium
Demolition has begun on Stadionul Dan Păltinișanu in Timișoara, Romania, to make way for a modern 30,000-seat venue. Opened in 1963, the 32,000-capacity stadium had fallen into disrepair, with its final football match played in September 2024. Cluj-based SMZ Impex is handling the demolition, which includes salvaging seats for local clubs and residents.
The new stadium, overseen by Compania Națională de Investiții (CNI), is expected to cost €140 million and take around three years to complete. With 87 companies expressing interest in the project, the contractor selection process is underway. Timiș County Council head Alfred Simonis confirmed funding is secured, with construction set to begin once procedural steps are finalised.
The new facility aims to revitalise Timișoara’s sporting infrastructure, providing a modern venue for football, rugby, and entertainment events.
Naples Authorities Assess Future of Stadio Diego Armando Maradona
Naples authorities are evaluating the possible reopening of the stadium’s third tier, which has been closed for 21 years, to facilitate redevelopment plans. Mayor Gaetano Manfredi confirmed technical assessments are underway to determine if this section can be used to accommodate season ticket holders during renovation works.
Meanwhile, Napoli owner Aurelio De Laurentiis has expressed interest in building a new 60,000-seat stadium instead of refurbishing the current venue. This could impact Naples’ chances of being selected as a host city for UEFA Euro 2032, with the Italian Football Federation set to finalise its venues by mid-2026.
Originally opened in 1959 as Stadio San Paolo, the stadium was renamed in honour of Diego Maradona in 2020. The ongoing discussions reflect Naples’ efforts to modernise its football infrastructure while balancing historic preservation with future ambitions.

Papua New Guinea’s NRL Team to Play at Sir Hubert Murray Stadium
Papua New Guinea’s forthcoming National Rugby League (NRL) franchise, set to debut in 2028, will host its home games at the 25,000-seat Sir Hubert Murray Stadium in Port Moresby. Prime Minister James Marape confirmed this decision, highlighting the stadium’s significance as a symbol of the nation’s passion for rugby league.
The stadium will undergo a two-phase redevelopment to meet NRL standards. The first phase aims to complete the stadium for NRL matches, while the second phase plans to add a high-rise hotel and car park, integrating with Harbour City’s infrastructure. Port Moresby Governor Powes Parkop expressed enthusiasm, stating that Papua New Guinea is ready for the big stage.
If Sir Hubert Murray Stadium isn’t ready by 2028, the smaller Santos National Football Stadium, with a capacity of around 15,000, may serve as an alternative venue.
This development follows the December announcement of Papua New Guinea’s NRL franchise, part of a 10-year agreement involving the Australian government. The initiative underscores the nation’s commitment to enhancing its sports infrastructure and elevating its presence in international rugby league.
