Manchester United’s New Old Trafford Project Advances
Manchester United is moving closer to realising its vision for a new stadium to replace Old Trafford, aiming for a 100,000-seat, world-class venue. The club is negotiating a crucial land purchase from Freightliner, offering £50 million, though Freightliner’s valuation stands at £400 million. The deal is being carefully monitored by government authorities, who may intervene to facilitate a fair transaction.
Politicians, including Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham, have expressed support, even suggesting a compulsory purchase if required. The project, estimated at £2 billion, is designed to elevate United’s profile internationally and provide a premier venue for fans and events.
Plans include implementing Personal Seat Licences (PSLs), with prices ranging from £570 to £4,830 for season tickets, to help finance the development. Co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe remains committed, emphasising that the stadium is vital for long-term success. The club hopes the facility will be operational by the 2030/31 season, combining cutting-edge design with sustainability and fan experience.

RFU’s ambitions for Twickenham concerts set back
The Rugby Football Union (RFU) has suffered a setback after Richmond Council denied its bid to expand non-sporting events at Twickenham. The RFU had sought looser licensing limits to stage as many as 15 concerts annually, including some on non-Saturday dates — aiming to monetise a stadium that lies idle for many days each year.
Instead, the council granted only limited changes: extension of hours for smaller events, an indoor curfew of 1 am for minor functions, and 36 late-night indoor events. Yet, crucially, the cap of three major non-sporting events per year remains in place, with one allowed outside Saturday.
The council also imposed strict rules on entertainment hours, alcohol sales, noise, safety, and antisocial behaviour. The RFU says the grant is only partial and is now “reviewing the outcome carefully”. They argue that the outdated concert cap discourages promoters, who prefer London venues like Wembley and The O₂.

Union Berlin secures support for revised stadium plan
Berlin’s Senate has given the green light to Union Berlin’s scaled-back expansion of Stadion An der Alten Försterei, after the club trimmed its ambitions. The original plan for a 40,500-capacity stadium faced objections over transport and infrastructure; the revised proposal reduces capacity and introduces more seating in place of standing areas.
In doing so, Union aims to ease political resistance while retaining the long-term goal of reaching full capacity later. The Senate’s approval includes acceptance of a traffic concept and offers room for future development toward the original target.
Union President Dirk Zingler acknowledged the compromise as painful but necessary to maintain momentum. Local officials emphasised that despite the temporary reduction, the ambition for a first-class stadium suited for international matches is very much alive.

Valencia CF Attempts Third Sale of Iconic Mestalla
Valencia CF has launched its third attempt to sell the iconic Mestalla stadium to finance the long-delayed Nou Mestalla project. The 90,000 m² site, valued at approximately €150 million, is being marketed through CBRE.
Previous sale attempts in 2006 and 2019 were unsuccessful, leaving the club reliant on alternative financing to complete the new stadium. The sale would enable the demolition of Mestalla, freeing land for residential and commercial developments, while redirecting funds into completing the Nou Mestalla. The club emphasises that a successful transaction is crucial for realising a modern venue capable of hosting top-tier domestic and international matches.
Valencia CF hopes the redevelopment will improve fan amenities, boost revenue, and meet UEFA standards. The third sale attempt signals determination to resolve a longstanding challenge while maintaining the club’s competitive edge. By combining property development with stadium construction, Valencia aims to balance financial stability and sporting ambition.
Racing Santander Unveils Ambitious Plan to Modernise El Sardinero
Racing Santander has unveiled an ambitious scheme to modernise its historic El Sardinero stadium, with an estimated cost of €68 million. The plan seeks to increase capacity to 28,000 seats, add a third tier, and renovate the facade, improving both aesthetics and functionality.
The project includes new structures adjacent to the East and West stands, creating additional seating and VIP facilities. A new roof will solve longstanding issues with water leaks and maintenance. Beyond the stadium itself, 26,000 m² of surrounding land will be transformed into a multifunctional space for community, sports, and cultural events, including landscaped gardens, commercial zones, and a 500-space underground car park.
The club intends to fund the project entirely through long-term private investment concessions, avoiding reliance on public funds. Racing Santander believes the redevelopment will enhance the matchday experience, attract larger audiences, and strengthen its position in Spanish football while providing social and economic benefits to the surrounding city.
